What It Is
Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir is an AR (Augmented Reality) game that uses the 3DS’ camera and 3D screen to pull you into a ghost story that will have ghosts appearing in your room. You scan your room using the 3DS as a viewer until spotting the ghost then you zap them with the 3DS until they vanish.
Why It’s Fun
The game is a creepy and scary story about a haunted house and a Cursed Memoir. This memoir is a real AR book that comes with the game and comes to life when viewed through the 3DS. As you play the game you will encounter scenarios that require you to look at the book using the 3DS and its camera. While looking at the book, the pages change and come to life on the 3D screen with graphics that are so good they will have you convinced that the pages are really changing.
Who It’s For
This story in Spirit Camera is genuinely scary and includes a dark house with woman in black who steals people’s faces. I definitely won’t let my four-year-old nephew play it and will only let my seven-year-old nephew play it if I’m with him. Kids 10 and up should be fine playing this game but there is some blood and gore so parents need to take that into account.
What To Be Aware Of
Spirit Camera requires a brightly lit room, a flat surface to place the Cursed Memoir on but no direct light hitting the Memoir. You will also need to move around the Memoir while keeping it in the 3DS’ field of vision. All of these requirements hinder the portability of the 3DS, which means it isn’t going to be a game you can play in the car or on a plane ride.
In addition to the main story mode, there are additional modes that add to the game’s replay value. One such mode is called Spirit Photography, which lets you take pictures with the 3DS camera and then watch as scary visions appear in the picture. These pictures can be stored to the 3DS’ memory and then manipulated using the camera app.
