What It Is
Rilakkuma is the Japanese sensation that's slowly finding its way to America. The story behind Rilakkuma is that he's a soft toy bear who appears to wear a bear costume in the same design as his body. He mysteriously appeared at Japanese worker Kaoru's apartment one day and decided to take up residence there. The Rilakkuma doll is 22-inches long and made of super-soft velvet-like plush. The bear's paws are full of what feels like bean bag stuffing. And just like the real character, this toy has a zipper on its back that, when unzipped, reveals a light blue polka dot-patterned material. In the Rilakkuma stories, the reason for the zipper on his back is unknown. In this case, the doll comes with a little board book and you can use the zippered part to hold the book. The illustrated book introduces Rilakkuma and some of the other characters, and has some phrases and sentences in both English and Japanese.
