What It Is
Mindstorms is LEGO's line of buildable robot kits and the Mindstorms: EV3 is LEGO's latest and most advanced kit yet for the line. The EV3 includes 550 LEGO Technic pieces, a programmable Intelligent Brick, different sensors, motors and an infrared remote control. All of these items can be used to build real working robots.
Why It’s Fun
This is as close to building a robot that you can get without going to M.I.T. The pieces in the EV3 box can be used to build one of five different robot models. The included instructions will build the Tracker, or builders can go online to get the instructions for the other four models. The real fun of the EV3 comes in creating your own unique models. Whatever you and your kids decide to build, the Intelligent Brick will act as the brains of the robot and allow you to program multiple commands and actions for the robot. Builders can also hook the intelligent Brick up to a computer for additional command options. The Intelligent Brick also features built-in Bluetooth that allows you to control your robot with an iOS or Android device and the Mindstorms app.
Who It’s For
While young LEGO fans should have no problems building the robots, the intelligent brick and programming options for this set are pretty advanced and are going to appeal to LEGO fans 10 and up. Adults will also be impressed by EV3, which makes this a great set for adults to work on with the kids in their lives.
What To Be Aware Of
Building the Tracker robot took us a little over an hour but we are still figuring out all of the fun things we can do with the Intelligent Brick.
All of this sophisticated equipment does not come cheap, and the suggested retail price on the EV3 is $350. But unlike other building sets, this one can grow with your child and the more your kids and you learn about programming, the more advanced your creations can get.
The EV3 requires 2 AAA batteries for the remote and 6 AA batteries for the Intelligent Brick.
