What It Is
CSE Games' Quartex is an abstract tile matching game in which players align the corners of four different tiles to form one of four shapes: a yellow circle, red square, blue star, or purple cross. The game starts by making piles of different colored tokens and placing them in the gaming space. Place all the games tiles in the tile bag. Depending on how many players are playing, a certain number of tiles will need to be removed from the bag before gameplay can start. Each player draws five tiles and places them behind a shield. Then, one tile is drawn from the bag and placed at the center of the gaming area. Players then take turns placing tiles to match a side of the tiles currently on the table. Once a shape is complete, that player gets to take a corresponding token. Players will draw a new tile after each turn. Gameplay continues until there are no tiles left that can be matched. Players then add up their scores, which are determined not by the amount of tokens they've earned but by the value of each token, which is based on the number of tokens of that color that remain in the gaming space.
Why It’s Fun
Quartex is a mind-bending puzzle game that will definitely keep your brain cells and matching skills working. The gameplay overall is fairly straight forward and easy to follow. But it's the scoring system that makes the game much more interesting, and especially for players who enjoy games that put a unique twist on a typical puzzle game, Quartex delivers.
Who It’s For
Quartex is for two to five players, ages 8 and up. However, the scoring system can be a bit tricky, so in order for a player to get the most enjoyment out of the game, we suggest it for kids who enjoy more strategic gameplay.
What To Be Aware Of
If a player can not place any of his tiles, he must move all his tiles in front of the shield as proof to his opponents. If his opponents agree, then the player can draw up to five new tiles from the bag. If there are no tiles left in the bag, the player is out for the rest of the game.
Each token behind your shield is equal to the amount of tokens left of that color in the playing area. So in order to win the game, players must think strategically and be sure to diversify their tokens throughout the game. This will help to keep the score close throughout the game.
For two to three players, remove one tile before starting the game. For four players, remove three tiles. And for five players, you don't need to remove any tiles before starting the game.
Each tile features a mirror image of the same design on its reverse side, so there are multiple opportunities to create a shape.
