What It Is

Maestro Stu Saves the Zoo is a gorgeous picture book about a young boy who’s lucky enough to live next door to a zoo. Needless to say, the zoo is his favorite place to visit. But, a greedy business man wants to close the zoo and build a mall. Once the animals learn of their fate, they take quick action to save their home. Together with young Stu, they create a wonderful symphony of animal sounds that brings in crowds of visitors and the zoo is saved.

Why It’s Fun

The heartwarming story is a feel-good read that kids will want to read again and again. And, the painted illustrations are beyond fabulous. The illustrator is the very talented Tim Bowers, who’s brought to life dozens of children’s books, including Princess Pig which we reviewed a while back.

As a teaching tool, this book is full of idioms, which many of us commonly refer to as “figures of speech.” The author uses phrases such as “making a mountain out of a molehill” and “take the bull by the horns” to teach readers about this literary tool.

Who It’s For

This is a fantastic picture book for a favorite 4- to 8-year-old and would make a wonderful gift.

What To Be Aware Of

While the use of idioms is a key selling point for the publisher, the story and illustrations are really this zoo’s main attraction.
