What It Is

Skylanders Giants is the sequel to the best-selling kid’s video game of 2011, Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. Giants is an all new game with a new story line that introduces a new group of Skylanders characters known as The Giants. Giants are more than twice the size of regular Skylanders and have powers & abilities that reflect their size. There are hidden items and areas throughout the game that can only be accessed by a Giant.

Why It’s Fun

The hidden items scattered throughout the game can be used to acquire upgrades for the Skylanders characters. In an early level, there is a floating island tethered to the playable area that only a Giant can reach, which it does by reeling in the island by pulling the tether. Once reeled in, players can switch to any Skylander figure by placing it on the game’s Portal of Power and then grab the chest on the island.

Another example of the hidden items includes hats that when found and worn by a Skylander will unlock a new ability. In addition to upgrading the Skylanders abilities and weapons, players can also level up their characters simply by playing the game and gaining experience. Just like the first Skylanders game, all of these upgrades and level achievements are stored on the collectible toy figure and can be played in anyone’s Skylanders game, regardless of game system.

Speaking of the first game, all the Skylanders figures that you and your kids have been playing with for the past year will work in the new Giants game AND they can be leveled up another five levels to level 15.

Skylanders Giants can be played by one or two players and has a great player 2 drop-in feature. A second player can enter the game at any time by placing a second figure on the portal. They can also leave the game at any time by removing that figure.

Who It’s For

Giants is going to be a huge hit with kids around the ages of 5–13. It’s also a lot of fun for that age group’s parents (or uncles and aunts). Since the Giants game is an all-new story, you do not need to have played the first game in order to enjoy this sequel.

What To Be Aware Of

There will be more than 20 new collectible figures released for Skylanders Giants, which, in addition to the Giants figures, also includes the LightCore Skylanders that light up when placed on the Portal of Power.

Skylanders Giants is out now and can be purchased in a Starter Pack that includes the game, a portal, one Giant and two new, non-giant figures. For everyone that already has the portal from the first Skylanders game, you can buy the Portal Owners Pack, which comes with the new game and one Giant figure. Figures are also sold individually.

Repeat Play

At the end of each level, there is a summary of how many hidden items, hats and areas were found. Since so many of the hidden objects unlock new abilities, kids will probably want to go back and play through the level again to find everything. Some of the hidden items can only be reached by specific Skylanders so you can also return to the game any time you buy a new Skylander figure.
