What It Is
The Legend of Captain McFinn & Friends is about a band of bullies who are taught a lesson. Captain McFinn was a mean shark who terrorized weaker, smaller fish. One day he went too far and got himself hurt, and the Undersea Friends he bullied came to his rescue. Luckily, he learned that you make friends through kindness and ended up becoming the leader and protector of the fish in Sandy Dusty Reef.
Why It’s Fun
This book caught my eye as I was strolling through the annual publishing industry trade show this spring. The bright-eyed colorful characters appeared to be “highly inspired” by a Disney or Pixar film, so I was a bit skeptical. But after reading the story, I was pleasantly surprised. The illustrations are colorful and engaging, as is the story. The message about bullying is very obvious, but it doesn’t seem too forced.
Who It’s For
Captain McFinn is most likely to be enjoyed by four and five year olds, though the publisher recommends a four-to-eight age range.
What To Be Aware Of
While I liked the book and kids should too, I’m not sure it will have a strong enough read again pull to warrant the $17.99 hardcover price, so you may want to look for the paperback version, or borrow this from the library. A second Captain McFinn story is also available along with a Captain McFinn music CD, activity book and other products. Look for them on Amazon or captainmcfinn.com.
