What It Is
With the Discovery Kids Build Your Own Recycle Paper Factory, kids can make their own recycled paper and design and decorate it, too. To start, tear or rip paper into bits and place them in a bowl filled with warm water. Let the paper soak for at least two hours. Once soaked, fill the mixer halfway with water and put a handful of the soaked paper in it. Blend for several minutes until you create a paper pulp. Pour water into the tray so that it is about half full, and add two or three handfuls of the paper pulp. Swirl the mixture together with your hands. Then choose a Deckle to create a paper shape. Use the paper press to squeeze out excess moisture. Then let the recycled paper dry for at least 24 hours.
The kit comes with a mixer, six Deckles (or stencils so kids can shape their paper), a paper press, two cloths, two butterfly nuts, and a tray.
Why It’s Fun
The Recycle Paper Factory is designed to show kids real methods of recycling used today and that the process is possible in their very own home. The whole process will take some time to complete. To start off, you have to let the paper soak. Before you can finish, you have to let the paper dry. But once complete, kids have cool, shaped pieces of paper that they can actually use. And the Recycle Paper Factory can be used over and over again.
Who It’s For
The Build Your Own Recycle Paper Factory is for ages 8 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
If you plan to use your paper as stationery, you can dissolve a packet of gelatin (sold separately) in warm water and stir it into the pulp mixture. The gelatin will make the paper less porous so ink will not bleed.
The Recycle Paper Factory is available at Target.
