What It Is

“A Ball for Daisy” is a wordless picture book. However, while there are no words, there is definitely a plot. Daisy the dog loves playing with her ball. One day in the park, another dog pops it and Daisy becomes very sad. She misses her ball and is quite lonely without it. The next day, the owner of the dog who popped the ball surprises Daisy with a shiny new ball.

Why It’s Fun

The old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” is definitely true with this selection. Beautifully artistic illustrations give the impression that a child painted the pages. Parents and preschoolers will have a fun time being creative and making up their own dialogue. The author-illustrator also gives parents and kids an opportunity to explore how they might feel when they lose a beloved plaything.

Who It’s For

Preschoolers and toddlers who’ve graduated from board books will get the most enjoyment out of this book. Wordless picture books are great for the car because toddlers and preschoolers can “read” them by themselves or even to you.

What To Be Aware Of

This is a great way to get your kids thinking imaginatively and verbalizing what they imagine. It helps kids understand narrative on a very basic level.
