What It Is
With ScaniMagic, kids can make their own animation. In collaboration with the creator of the book Gallop!, which uses the Scanimation technique, ScaniMagic is a new toy that lets kids color and watch their own animation. Open the lid and color the scrambled image. Close the lid, then roll the knobs back and forth to watch the picture move. There are 12 Scanimation pictures to color, including a horse, penguin, dolphin, spiral, and more. ScaniMagic comes with the ScaniMagic scroller, six markers, and two 40-inch coloring scrolls. The ScaniMagic unit has a storage drawer for the markers.
Why It’s Fun
It's really fascinating to watch what was once a still picture move across the ScaniMagic screen. For kids who have read and enjoyed Gallop!, they will love being able to see just how the "magic" works and create their own moving images. But even kids who aren't familiar with Gallop! will like how easy it is to animate the pictures on the scroll.
Who It’s For
ScaniMagic is for ages 6 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
Rufus Butler Seder created the Scanimation technique. It is a state-of-the-art six-phase animation process that combines the "persistence of vision" principle with a striped acetate overlay to give the illusion of movement. His book Gallop!, which was published in 2007, was the first to use this trademark Scanimation technique.
