Snug as a Bug in a Rug is a new cooperative board game, which means that everyone plays together as a team against a common obstacle and not against each other. In this game, players help the bugs get snug under the rug (under the game board) before the three stink bugs stink up the place (are on top of the game board). To get the bugs under the rug, you spin the spinner (which has four rings on it: one for colors, one for numbers, one for shapes, and one for eyes) and find a matching bug.
There are three levels of play with specific rules designed for age and developmental capability. Level 1 is for ages 3–4. In this level, roll the die only once and then put it aside for the rest of the game. Whatever the die indicates—shape, color, or number—will be the attribute that will be matched by all players during the game. So if the die lands on color, players take turns spinning the spinner and finding bugs that match the color the spinner indicates. When you find one, pick it up and slip it completely under the board. Continue taking turns and matching bugs until the first time no one can find a matching bug. When this happens, place a stink bug on the board. At this point, all players stop looking for color matches and instead look at the bugs' eyes. Continue to take turns spinning the spinner and looking for big eyes or little eyes depending on where the spinner stops. If you can't find a bug with the right eyes, place another stink bug on top of the board. Keep taking turns until either all the colorful bugs are under the board or three stink bugs are on top of the board.
Level 2, which is for ages 4–5, has the same gameplay except the die is rolled on every turn, so the attribute a player must match changes every time. If you roll numbers, spin the spinner and find a bug that has the same number of shapes as the number indicated on the spinner. If you roll shapes, spin the spinner and find a bug that matches the shape indicated on the spinner. As in Level 1, the first time you can't find a bug that matches, you must place a stink bug on the board. Then find bugs with little or big eyes until either all bugs are under the board or three stink bugs are on top.
Level 3 is for ages 5–6 and does not use the die. On your turn, spin the spinner and then find two attributes that match two of the rings indicated on the spinner. For example, a yellow bug with big eyes or a bug with circles and big eyes. As in Levels 1 and 2, when you can't find a matching bug, place a stink bug on the board. Then find bugs with little or big eyes until all the bugs are under the board or three stink bugs are on top of the board.
The game comes with one die, three stink bug pieces, a game board with spinner, and 24 colorful bug pieces. It is for two to four players.
Snug as a Bug in a Rug requires no reading, making it easy for younger players to play. It's also a game that grows with your child. As a child grows, she moves to the next level of play, adding complexity at each age and level. This is a cute way to introduce preschoolers to colors, numbers, shapes, counting, visual discrimination, and sizes.
Snug as a Bug in a Rug is for ages 3–6.
