What It Is
Swish is a fast-paced game where you slip, rotate, and stack cards. Each transparent card has hoops and balls on it. The object of the game is to be the first player to create the most Swishes. Layering two or more cards so that every ball swishes into a hoop of the same color creates a Swish. (Kind of like playing basketball, only with cards.) The cards may be rotated and/or flipped but must be positioned on top of each other in the same orientation, and no hoop or ball can be left unmatched. Each card you collect is worth a point, so a Swish made up of more cards will earn you more points.
To get started, select a flat playing area that is in full view of all players. Choose one player as the dealer, and have the dealer shuffle the card deck. The dealer deals 16 cards (four rows of four) into the playing area. Once the last card has been placed, the dealer calls "Go!" and all players begin looking for Swishes. Players may not touch the cards while they are searching. They must flip and rotate the cards in their minds. A player calls "Swish!" when he can identify a Swish. To prove that the Swish is correct, he layers the selected cards on top of one another. If the Swish is valid, the player collects the cards that make up the Swish into his score pile. The dealer replaces the cards with new cards from the deck. If the Swish isn't valid, the player must discard a single card from his score pile. (If the player has no cards yet, there is no penalty.) The game ends when there are no more cards in the deck and no Swishes can be made with the remaining cards in the playing area. The player with the most cards is the winner.
There are alternate ways to play, including Beginner Swish, Mixed Ability Swish, Expert Swish, and Solitaire Swish.
The game comes with 60 transparent Swish cards and a card-holding game bag. The company also says that it will increase your "spatial IQ." We're not sure what that is, but for younger kids, the ability to rotate images and build sequences in their minds is a valuable skill.
Why It’s Fun
Swish is a game that will mentally challenge players. There's a bit of a learning curve with this game. It's easy to see two-card Swishes, but it may take some time and practice to see how to put together three-card, four-card, or other multiple-card Swishes. The fast-paced nature of the game adds to the challenge. Once you get the hang of it, it is really fun to play, competing against other players to find Swishes.
Who It’s For
Swish is for ages 8 and up.
What to Be Aware of
It's best to play on a light-colored surface so that you can easily see the images on the transparent cards.
