Kids love playing with their mom or dad's iPad as much as they like to color. And now there's an app and a cool accessory that lets them simulate coloring on the iPad in a wide variety of ways. The Crayola ColorStudio HD brings digital coloring to life, turning the iPad into an interactive coloring book with moving images and music. The app is a free download and works with a digital stylus called the Crayola iMarker that simulates marks made with a Crayola crayon, marker, colored pencil, and paint brush on the screen. (There's also a finger mode that lets kids color only with their fingers, but it's somewhat limited.) The iMarker is sold separately for about $29.99. Kids can color and interact with animated coloring pages that move and react as kids color. It's easy to switch between crayons, markers or pencils, and there are features that let kids color large spaces all at once. It's all activated by a touch. Kids can also do free-style drawing and make their own coloring pages by selecting outline images from the library. Once the artwork is picture-perfect, kids can share pictures via email or Facebook and print out the pictures. A WiFi or network connection is required for kids to share their artwork.
There's lots of ways kids can play with the ColorStudio HD app and lots of things for kids to explore and color. It's a no-mess way to get creative and is great for on-the-go play.
The different media—crayons, pencils, paints—create different effects on the iPad screen, making this as close to a traditional coloring experience as possible.
The Crayola ColorStudio HD is for ages 3 and up.
While you can use your finger on the touchscreen, we recommend buying the Crayola iMarker for a better and easier play experience.
This toy doesn't replace traditional coloring or painting play, but it's an innovation that will come in handy traveling, in restaurants or wherever it might not be easy to have a lot of art supplies around.
The iMarker comes with one AA battery.
