What It Is
Hasbro's new KRE-O brand provides builders ages 6 and up with the opportunity to experience Transformers in a new way—as construction toys. Each KRE-O Transformers set features two types of builds: a robot or a vehicle. The bricks and pieces of the KRE-O sets are compatible with other leading brick brands.
KRE-O Transformers Optimus Prime is a 90-piece building set that lets kids build Optimus Prime either as a robot or as an 18-wheel semi truck. (The only way to "transform" the model is to rebuild it.) There are many moving pieces integrated into the model, so kids can put Optimus Prime in different poses. Other sets include Bumblebee and Mirage.
Why It’s Fun
KRE-O Transformers Optimus Prime is great for kids who are both building fans—and Transformers fans. Since this is the first time that the Transformers brand has appeared in this kind of configuration, there's a certain level of novelty to this as well. Kids will like building Optimus Prime (either in vehicle or robot mode) themselves and creating their own Transformers adventures.
Who It’s For
KRE-O Transformers Optimus Prime is for Transformers fans ages 6—12. However, older building and Transformers fans are likely to want these as collectibles.
What to Be Aware of
It takes about 25 minutes to build Optimus Prime as the truck. The instructions are very clear and the pieces fit together well and stay together as you build.
The finished model doesn't transform. If you want to build the robot, you must take apart the truck and rebuild. You could say this is transforming the long way, but for kids who like construction, that's all part of the excitement.
Kids on the younger end of the spectrum might need help and a little patience with the smaller parts. Parents should help kids apply the labels and the wheels in truck mode.
