What It Is
Redakai is a new collectible trading card game from Spin Master. Unlike other trading card games, Redakai cards utilize Blast 3D technology, which means the cards contain 3D and animation effects, which players can see without wearing special glasses. The cards are also partially transparent. This is important because in the game, players stack their cards on one another which gives a constantly updated record of the effect of attacks, damage, powers and health. Ultimately it is the stack of cards on top of an initial monster card that determines the outcome of each round.
Before the battle (game) begins, each player places one character card in front of them. Each player also builds a deck of attack cards and monster cards. On each player's turn, they draw the top card of their deck, then play that card immediately. When you draw a monster card, put it on your own character card. This can increase your defense zones and heal damage zones that attack cards have hit. Play attack cards on top of your opponent's character card. When all three of your opponent's damage zones are hit, the top cards on his stack will show all red spaces in the zones. That character is finished, and the other player is the winner. If a player runs out of cards in his draw pile and is unable to draw a card on his turn, that player loses the game. Once kids have mastered the basic game, they can play the advanced version.
The Redakai X-Reader Starter Pack comes with an X-Reader, which players use to store and stack their cards, and 22 Blast3D cards. Additional card packs are sold separately.
Why It’s Fun
This is a new take on a now-classic play pattern. Redakai takes trading cards to the next level through its use of 3D technology. The cards look really cool and will most likely chiefly appeal to boys due to the battling, monsters and artwork, though there's no reason girls can't master or enjoy this game as well. The basic game is easy to learn and fast to play, though it does require strategic thinking to defend your character card while trying to damage your opponent's card. The advanced version offers seasoned players new challenges.

What to Be Aware of
A TV series based on the trading card game will premiere on Cartoon Network later this year. Spin Master is also producing action figures based on Redakai.
