What It Is
This new series is about a 12-year-old girl, Randi Rhodes, who just happens to be a black belt at karate and an astute young detective. Randi and her father move from their Brooklyn home to rural Deer Creek, Tennessee, and she is not happy about it. Randi is also trying to adjust to life and deal with her emotions following the passing of her mother a year earlier. A good distraction comes when Deer Creek's Founders Day is postponed because of a robbery. Randi sets out to solve the mystery and finds some good friends and a renewed connection with her father along the way.
Why It’s Fun
This is the first novel by Academy Award-winning actress, Octavia Spencer, and it's fantastic. From page one, Randi Rhodes and her adventures will delight any girl, and even boys. Ms. Spencer does a great job of blending the struggles of a pre-teen girl, who must deal with a new life without her mother, into an engaging story that has humor, adventure and poignant moments.
Who It’s For
Though the publisher recommends this book for ages 8 and up, age 10 seems more appropriate because of the age of characters and plot dynamics.
What To Be Aware Of
This first-in-a-series book is available in e-book, hardcover and audio. No word on plans for book two, but hopefully it will come in 2014!
