What It Is

The Jersey Devil is a legend that dates back to the English colonists. Way down in Southern New Jersey is a place called the Pine Barrens. It's a swampy, murky stretch of land shrouded in mist and fog. In the fall of 1735, a woman named Mother Leeds gave birth to her 13th child on a very dark and stormy night. The midwives that helped deliver the baby bearing such an unlucky number claimed that it arrived as a monstrous creature. From that point on, any misfortune or tragedy was blamed on the Jersey Devil ... and still is to this day!

Why It’s Fun

Whether you believe it or not, the legend of the Jersey Devil is one that has survived for centuries. The New Jersey Devils hockey team is named for it and Bruce Springsteen sung about it. This version and book is definitely one that will send shivers up and down your spine. The story is told through spooky, detailed prose and is accompanied by ominous illustrations. The illustrator's interpretation of the actual Jersey Devil creature is very fierce and frightening.

Who It’s For

Because of the scary creature illustrations, this book is not for young children. Age eight is an appropriate starting point, depending on the child's scare tolerance.

What To Be Aware Of

The cover alone is apt to frighten some young children!
