What It Is
Alphaman is an arcade-style, educational, puzzle-maze game for iOS and Android devices. Players explore with Alphaman across 12 different themed maps, including Earth, Fire, Ice, Classic, and more. Navigate Alphaman through each maze by swiping your finger across the screen in the direction you want Alphaman to travel. The object is to lead Alphaman to letters and earn rewards for correctly spelling words. Players must ensure that Alphaman reaches the letters in the correct order for accurate spelling or else Alphaman will lose power and strength. As kids advance through each map, they may start off spelling a three-letter word but finish spelling a seven-letter word.
Each map also has themed enemies that kids must help Alphaman avoid. In the Earth map, the enemies are slugs. In the Ice map, the enemies are snowmen. Players can also pick up Alphapowers along the way to help Alphaman gain super powers, teleport to the next letter, multiply his speed, combat the evil enemies, and ultimately advance to the next map.
Why It’s Fun
With multiple maps and words to spell, kids will be engaged playing Alphaman while also practicing spelling and letter recognition. It does take some practice to get the hang of navigating Alphaman through the mazes, but overall the app is easy to play.
Who It’s For
Alphaman is for ages 5–11.
What To Be Aware Of
This game is supposed to have sound, but the sound did not work for us.
Some of the words in this app are a little advanced. For example, "poudrin" and "nieve" were words used in the Ice map. We're pretty sure that kids (and even some adults) will not be familiar with these words, and the app does not provide definitions for the words.
For the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, you'll need iOS 4.3 or later to run this app. It is optimized for the iPhone 5. For Android devices, you'll need Android 2.3 and up.
