What It Is
The Scribble & Write Learning Pad is a handheld learning device that helps kids with core handwriting skills for both letters and numbers. One of the things we think is great about this toy is its simplicity. It really has one purpose: to help kids learn to write by tracing. It's a time-honored way that kids have learned to write, and as handwriting is being de-emphasized in early learning, this can be an important tool for parents and caregivers to help their kids with basic skills.
The toy has three modes: writing numbers, lowercase letters, and capital letters. It also has two levels. In level one, kids explore writing in what LeapFrog calls "free play". In level two, kids are guided stroke by stroke as they write the letters and numbers, and they get guidance if they miss a stroke.
The screen is a wipe-clean slate that can be easily erased with a push of the lever after each letter is written. After kids write the letter correctly, they receive audio reinforcement and a phonetic pronunciation of the letter in order to build context for the learning. We also like that after each letter is written, the lights go off so kids can see what they've done.
The stylus is child-sized and really good for small hands as they are just learning the proper tripod grip for writing. Parents may want to show younger kids the first few times. Another benefit is that the position of the stylus makes it work perfectly for left- or right-handed kids. There is also volume control, and the unit is sized just right for take-along play.
