What It Is
Rockin' Reading is a reading comprehension game. To play, you have to answer questions on the cards as you go through the five different levels all around the theme of becoming a rock star. While the questions all have a fun theme, they require a fairly sophisticated young reader to get them right. That's not a bad thing, though. There are literal questions, which are drawn from the text on each card; inferential questions that require information not stated in the questions; and deductive questions that require readers to draw a conclusion based on what they've read. The reading questions are broken up by Private Jet Pass cards, which let players skip ahead, and Rock It! cards that allow a player to take an action rather than answer a question to move ahead. These are equalizers that can help less talented or experienced readers catch up in the game. The game comes with a game board, 200 game cards, four player pieces, a tour bus card holder, and instructions. It is for two to four players.
Why It’s Fun
This game is going to appeal most to kids who are already good readers and who are entertained by the kind of puzzles that are on the cards. We did wonder, though, at what age a child would know, for example, that "extra" is a Latin prefix that means "outside of" or how to summarize a lot of disparate information. Clearly, however, a lot of thought and pedagogy went into the development of this game, and while we're not sure this would be a game kids would clamor to play, we can definitely see parents and caregivers using this with kids as a fun way to sharpen and reinforce skills. We also see this as an exceptional classroom or tutoring tool that combines important skills with an entertaining format.
