What It Is
5ive Straight is a new strategy game for two to nine players that, like the best strategy games, is inherently simple but requires a little cleverness and thinking to win. The object of the game is to get five of your pegs in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Game pieces include pegs in three colors, a board with numbers printed on it, and a deck of numbered cards.
To begin, shuffle the cards and deal four to each player. On his or her turn, a player may either place a peg or draw a card from the deck. If you place a peg, pick a card and place it face-up in front of you. Then play a peg in the space on the board marked with the number on the card or any higher number. If you have four or more cards in your hand, you must take a card.
Seems simple, right? Well, there are several strategies to consider. For one, you'll want to hold onto your lower-numbered cards as long as possible because those give you the most options for possible moves. You may also choose to block another player rather than build your own line. And you might have so-called dead cards. Say you have the number 92 in your cards and all the pegs from 92 to 99 are filled. That card can't be played. If you end up with four dead cards in your hand, you're out.
The game ends when one player completes his or her five in a row.
Why It’s Fun
We were impressed by the way the simple gameplay becomes more challenging and more strategic, and thus more fun, the more you play.
