What It Is
Fobie Friends is a new book series that addresses childhood fears in an entertaining and informative way. These books can be used by teachers, counselors, educators, and parents to help young children overcome a certain fear or phobia. The books are written by Leslie and Brian Miller with illustrations by Alessia Girasole.
There are three books in the series. Did My Owl Just Growl? addresses the fear of the dark. Climb the Monkey Bars? That's Bananas! addresses the fear of heights. Hold Your Seahorses! Water is the Worst addresses the fear of swimming in water. The characters in each book (a blue owl, a purple gorilla, and a seahorse) depict a more child-friendly version of each phobia. Each book uses a colorful and engaging Fobie Friend animal to comfort and guide a child through a fearful situation. Each book's rhyming text ends with the rhyme, "I'm strong now, a champion, brave as can be. I don't fear my fears, my fears they fear me!"
Why It’s Fun
Many young kids have fears of the dark, being alone, strangers, and monsters or other scary, imaginary creatures. This book series was created to entertain while helping children address these common fears. Each story presents the opportunity for the reader or listener to assimilate with a frightened young character, acknowledge a fear, and use simple guidance toward becoming less fearful. If your child has one of these specific fears, these books might be a useful way to help your child overcome his or her fear.
