What It Is
Kids can grow more than 5 kinds of cacti with the Light Cube Super LED Cactus Garden. Cacti start growing in one week and use LED lights, not sunlight, to grow. The kit comes with a plant cube terrarium, an LED light unit, a six-inch USB cable, a germination disk, instructions, and a Wild West Cactus Mix Seed Pack containing Giant Saguaro, Golden Barrel Cactus, Hedgehog, Star Cactus, and Old Man of the Andes.
Follow the instructions to plant the cacti seedlings and place the LED light unit on top of the terrarium. Plug the light unit into a computer's USB port to turn it on. There are three light settings to use. First, use blue lights to foster foliage. After the seedlings have germinated, use the red lights to promote flowering. After one month, use both red and blue lights to intensify the growth of the plants. Kids can experiment with different light intensities and times. The LED light unit also has a timer, so kids can choose how long they'd like the lights to stay on. (However, it's recommended that the lights stay on for 20 hours in the beginning, and the highest timer setting is only 12 hours.) Once the cacti begin to outgrow the plant cube terrarium, kids can transplant them to a larger container.
Why It’s Fun
Because this plant kit uses LED light instead of sunlight to help the cacti grow, we had high hopes that we'd have success with this kit. Unfortunately, that was not the case. We grew our cacti for five months, and while the cacti grew a little bit, they certainly didn't grow as tall as the picture on the box suggests.
Who It’s For
The Light Cube Super LED Cactus Garden is for ages 4 and up. Younger kids are going to need parental help reading instructions and getting everything set up.
What To Be Aware Of
Growing the cacti takes patience, so if your child is looking for instant gratification, this is not the kit for him or her.
The LED light unit has a two-year warranty from the date of purchase.
Also available is a Light Cube Super LED Mini-Meadow kit.
