Fun-and-Learning

What It Is

This book offers children a unique way to explore both poetry and nature. It’s packed with poems that are meant to be read in an alternating fashion by the parent and the child. One person reads the lines featured in one color, and the other reads lines in the second color. Each poem teaches kids a little fact about nature, such as how daffodil bulbs burst in the warming earth and then explode into flowers with the help of the sun.

Why It’s Fun

This interactive reading book is a great warm-up for spring. The illustrations are as colorful as a garden in full bloom and make this book one that beckons to be added to your child’s bookshelf. All of the poems rhyme, which makes them more fun to read aloud. Rhyming is also a great “tool” for kids who are learning to read, though this book is not necessarily geared to beginning readers.

Who It’s For

Although the publisher recommends this book for ages four and up, the language is very challenging for young children to read aloud. Kids may memorize some of the verses (thanks to the rhyming) and they can have an experience of “reading” along after several read-throughs. But, for “real” reading, seven is a better age for the author’s I-read-you-read format.

What To Be Aware Of

This book is available only in hardcover at a couple of dollars higher than a typical hardcover picture book.
