What It Is

The chupacabra is part of Latin American folklore. It is a mysterious creature that kills farm animals at night. In Chupacabra: Survive the Night, players must protect their goats, chickens, and burros from El Chupacabra. The game can be played in the dark (or low light) because the dice glow in the dark.

Each player takes six Chupacabra dice. On each side of the dice, there is either a picture of a chicken, goat, burro, or Chupacabra. Whoever is going to be the first attacker takes the starter chip. Each round starts with all players rolling their dice at the same time. The player with the starter chip attacks first. He can only attack if he rolls one or more Chupacabras. One Chupacabra kills up to two chickens or one goat. Two Chupacabras kills one burro. The attacker can attack any opponent, including multiple opponents if he has enough Chupacabras. The attacker takes the dice he killed and places them to the side of his own rolled dice. These dice are out of play (cannot be killed again) until the round is over. The more animals you kill, the more dice you will have to roll in future rounds.

After the first player attacks, the next player attacks. Play continues until all players have attacked. The starter chip now goes to the next player going clockwise. Add the dice you earned from attacking to the rest of your dice. Then a new round begins with all players rolling their new amount of dice. When a player has lost all of his or her dice, they are eliminated and must sit out until the game is over. Play continues until one player has collected all of the dice.

The game comes with 24 glow-in-the-dark dice, a starter chip, a reference card, and a "classified" letter from a cryptozoologist about the chupacabra legend. The game is for two to four players.

Why It’s Fun

This is an easy-to-learn and easy-to-play game that largely relies on the luck of the dice roll. No special skill is required, which makes it good for players of different ages to play together. Kids will think that the glow-in-the-dark dice are pretty cool.

Who It’s For

Chupacabra: Survive the Night is for ages 8 and up. The story of the chupacabra, which is in the "classified" letter as well as on the back of the game box, is kind of gruesome, so it's up to parents how specific to get when telling younger kids about the chupacabra legend.

What To Be Aware Of

The glow-in-the-dark dice work best if you've let them "charge" in light for several minutes before playing. You'll also need to rotate the dice to make sure each side gets some light.
