What It Is
The Lord of the Rings The Complete Trilogy Adventure Board Game lets fans play out the action from all three movies. The object of the game is to destroy the One Ring by getting Frodo, Gollum, and the One Ring token onto the Mount Doom space together. If Frodo or Gollum perish before the ring is destroyed or if Sauron captures the ring, the game is over and Sauron wins. If the ring is destroyed successfully, the winner is the player with the most Good Points.
Each player chooses a character and receives a character card with information on that character's life, strength, magic, and wisdom points. Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Gandalf the Grey begin on the Hobbiton space. Gimli, Boromir, Aragorn, and Legolas begin on the Rivendell space. All 10 characters must be in play even if you have fewer than 10 players. Players take turns rolling the two white dice to determine how many spaces they can move around the board. They can choose one number to move their own character and use the other number to move a free character, or a character that is not assigned to any player.
If you land on an event card space, take an event card that matches the color of the space. You might earn extra Good Points, collect helpful weapons, or move directly to another area on the board. You might also get to collect the One Ring.
If you land on a space that touches a Forces of Sauron token, you'll need to turn over the token, find the enemy card that matches the number on the token, and battle the enemy. You battle by rolling the dice and adding the numbers to your character's strength or magic points and the enemy's strength or magic points. Whoever has the highest number wins the battle. You can also choose to run from battle by rolling the white dice to see how many spaces you can run away from the enemy.
The game includes 12 hexagonal playing board pieces, 11 character pawns, 10 plastic bases, 49 Forces of Sauron tokens, one One Ring token, one Path Blocked token, two white dice, two black dice, 100 cards, a scorepad, and rules. The game is for two to 10 players.
Why It’s Fun
Fans of The Lord of the Rings movies will enjoy playing out the adventure and pretending to be characters from the movies. Because the battles rely on rolling dice, there's no skill involved in playing. This makes the battles not as exciting as kids might be expecting. Some of the event cards require strategic play because you get to keep and use the cards at a later time. But make sure you use the cards wisely.
It's important to read the instructions thoroughly. We have only given you a brief rundown of how to play, but there are other elements to the gameplay that make it more complicated. Older fans of The Lord of the Rings will most likely enjoy playing this game, while it might frustrate younger fans.
