What It Is
What It Is
Even the littlest kids want to play with mom and dad's iPhone or iPod Touch, but the thought of handing an expensive piece of equipment to an infant is probably more than a little scary. The Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case is a solution that lets kids as young as 6 months old play with these advanced devices with no worries. Simply place an iPhone or iPod Touch inside the durable Apptivity Case to keep it protected from accidental drops, drools, and unwanted call-making.
First open the case. Then take any case off your iPhone or iPod. Rest your device inside the case and then reinsert the back of the case. Be sure to follow the instructions. You have to exert a little bit of pressure to make sure the case holds your device snugly in place. You'll also want to start up the app you want to use before you put the device in the case because the case is designed so that babies can't randomly press the home button and change the app or make calls. You'll also want to adjust the volume, as those buttons are inaccessible once the device is in the case.
Once the device is in the case, kids can play. Fisher-Price has three learning apps available for free download. The Apptivity Case also has beads and a mirror for baby-appropriate play.
Why It’s Fun
We think this is a great idea for parents who want to allow their kids to play with these expensive devices. Naturally, Fisher-Price had to make some trade-offs to provide the level of protection necessary. For example, in order to prevent a child from making random calls, the home button can't be pushed, but that also means you can't change apps without opening up the case. Still, if your little one is clamoring to play with your iPod or iPhone, and you're willing to let him or her do it, this is a cute product that will keep the peace—and your peace of mind.
Who It’s For
The Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case is for ages 6—36 months.
What to Be Aware of
We're not reviewing the apps here, but suffice it to say that while Fisher-Price has age-graded this item for 6—36 months, the apps are definitely at the 1—2 years range.
The apps make limited use of the touch screen, which is a good thing because when we tried some apps for older kids, the screen protector somewhat limits the usual precision of the touchpoints for an iPhone or iPod Touch. For older kids, the most effective use of this might be watching videos, though the design might seem babyish for kids at the higher end of the age range.
We dropped the Apptivity Case with an iPhone in it from about two feet and the device was well protected, though obviously you'll want to use care if you give this to a child to play with. Also, while the clear film protects against spills and drips, it is water-resistant, not waterproof. A simulated spill allowed a few drops of liquid to leak through the case.
The Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case is compatible with iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod Touch 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations.
