Oblivion gave Tom Cruise one of his best openings ever (highest non-sequel debut since 2005′s War of the Worlds and fifth-best ever), however, with $38.2 million in ticket sales, it wasn’t exactly a stellar hit for Universal. The science-fiction flick should do well over the next two weeks but with Iron Man 3 blasting off on May 3, Oblivion will probably be forgotten.
Last week’s top earner, 42, slid into 2nd with $18.23 million and The Croods continues to do great with another $9.5 million in sales and a two week hold on the #3 spot. Scary Movie 5 continued to perform poorly coming in at 4th while G.I. Joe: Retaliation took in $5.8 million and the #5 spot on the list. It doesn’t look like Retaliation will outgross the first G.I. Joe movie (Rise Of Cobra) here in the states but it’s doing great overseas and thanks to international ticket sales, the movie’s worldwide total has already passed Rise.
