What It Is

The InnoTab 3 is a brand new learning app tablet from VTech. In the vein of the iPad mini, this is a smaller, less expensive tablet than the latest InnoTab 2S but it still delivers a great preschool learning experience. The InnoTab 3 is a lot smaller than the InnoTab 2S with many of the same features, such as a 2 megapixel, 180-degree rotating camera and different media players (ebook, music player, photo viewer, and video player). It also comes with 2 GB of onboard memory, which can be expanded up to 32 GB by adding an SD memory card, sold separately. This comes with 15 onboard apps and a Read, Play & Create cartridge that gets kids reading and playing.

One difference from the other InnoTabs is the directional pad at the bottom of the tablet. Kids can use the pad's up, down, right, and left arrows for gameplay.

Users will also be able to access the Learning Lodge, VTech's online app store featuring kids' current favorite characters, including Doc McStuffins, Sofia the First, and many more.

Why It’s Fun

At the end of the day, we found this to be an excellent toy with great tablet capabilities and appropriate content. We found the play comparable to the earlier, larger InnoTabs, and while the screen is significantly smaller than the original, kids who are used to playing with their parents' cell phones will find this very easy to use and navigate. This is solidly built and we dropped the demo model we got several times. It stood up to much rougher use than it would get in a kids' everyday play.

Who It’s For

The InnoTab 3 is for ages 3–9.

Although VTech has content that goes up to 9 years old, we think the sweet spot for this is going to be ages 2–6 for everyday play while older kids will appreciate the eReader, games, and photo apps.

What To Be Aware Of

The touchscreen needs a little firmer touch than say an adult's tablet or cell phone, but kids will quickly get the hang of that.

One thing parents will really appreciate is the price: $69.99 compared to the $99.99 for the InnoTab 2S. That might make it more appealing to parents and caregivers looking for an engaging first tablet for their kids.
