What It Is

Amelia Bedelia is the creation of Peggy Parish, and in the original series, Amelia was an adult maid who worked for a family in England and who always took things literally to usually hilarious results. After Peggy's death in 1988, her nephew Herman started writing new books with stories featuring Amelia as a child and designed for younger readers (and pre-readers with adult participation).

One of these books is Amelia Bedelia's First Library Card. In this book, Amelia is not just prone to taking things literally, she is inconsiderate, throwing away the juice box in the book return slot at the library, leaving books out in the rain, and so forth. She gets off the hook for destroying a book by giving the librarian a cupcake rather than learning a serious lesson about responsibility.

Why It’s Fun

This book was a disappointment. Through her actions, Amelia comes off as an unpleasant and spoiled kid. Add to this that the stuff about the library is a little too didactic and, frankly, boring and the result is a fairly tedious book and certainly one that kids won't want to hear again, though it's always good to teach them that books should be cared for and that one has a responsibility when you borrow books from the library. However, we're not sure Amelia learned that lesson here.

Who It’s For

Amelia Bedelia's First Library Card is for ages 4–8.
