What It Is
Best-selling author David McPhail, who’s written many books about bears, explores the topic of “attachment objects,” toys or other things that children become, you guessed it, attached to over many others. In this story, the boy is Ben and the object is Bear. The simple text tells how Bear fits into every part of Ben’s day. They do everything together. After breakfast, they play hide-and-seek and do tricks to make each other laugh. At night, Ben tells Bear a bedtime story and Bear snuggles with Ben until he falls asleep.
Why It’s Fun
At one time or another, most children form a special bond with a stuffed toy. For some kids, this bond stays strong even into adulthood. (My niece’s “Mr. Bear” went off to college with her!) This is a charming board book and a classic in the making. The illustrations are gorgeous and make it a book to treasure. And, parents will want to keep it handy as their child grows because it’s a great choice for kids learning to read.
Who It’s For
The publisher recommends it for ages 2 and up, but I see no reason not to add to a baby’s library. It would make a fantastic gift.
What To Be Aware Of
You just might want to find where your parents packed away your own childhood “friend”!
