What It Is

This new picture book is about a family who moves to the country to build their own house from the ground up, just like the homesteaders did hundreds of years ago. The children, including the young female narrator, watch as their parents, along with the help of friends and family, turn an empty lot into a loving home.

Why It’s Fun

A construction site can be a riveting scene for any age, but especially for young children. This book’s large scale allows for lots of colorful pictures of machines, vehicles and all kinds of house-building activities. And, the first-person narrative captures all the wonder and awe of a child witnessing the building of her own home firsthand. Author Jonathan Bean was inspired to write and illustrate this book as an homage to his parents who still live in the very house that they built with their own hands.

Who It’s For

Building Our House is why picture books exist and kids, especially boys, will flip through the pages again and again. The publisher’s recommended age is 4–8, but even younger kids will love the pictures.

What To Be Aware Of

It’s only available in hardcover, but worth the $17.99 price.
