What It Is
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is a time-traveling adventure starring Sly Cooper and his gang of critter friends that picks up where the last Sly Cooper game, Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, ended. Don’t worry if your kids don’t remember where that game ended or if they even played it because Thieves in Time starts off with a great animated prologue that brings us up to speed.
The game is all about Sly and his pals solving a mystery through a series of missions that will take them to Feudal Japan, Ancient Arabia, Medieval England, and the Wild West.
Kids can play as Sly or either of his partners – Bentley and Murray – and each character has his own unique abilities, strengths and gadgets.
Why It’s Fun
The game looks and feels like a cartoon with funny characters, colorful environments, and goofy scenarios. Kids will love the mission that involves rescuing the Ninja master who invented sushi but was jailed for serving bad fish.
Levels are separated by animated sequences, and each level has its own title screen that adds to the cartoon appearance of the game. Kids can feel like they are watching a cartoon, where they are controlling the action.
Who It’s For
This is a great game for young gamers around the ages of 5–10. There are helpful tutorials and assist features like a jump assist that automatically lands the character on small objects. This assist makes leaping onto a narrow ledge or running along a tightrope fun and not frustrating.
What To Be Aware Of
Thieves in Time is available exclusively for the PS3 and PlayStation Vita. The game has a cross save ability that lets you save the game to the cloud then play it on either PlayStation device.
While there is little reason to replay the game once complete, this is a huge game that could take the average young gamer days to complete if they played it non-stop. Each mission has a main goal, however, missions take place in large open areas that players can explore. There are hidden items and mini-games scattered throughout the levels as well as items like trophies, treasures and coins. Coins can be used to purchase upgrades and new abilities for the characters and other objects can be used to decorate Sly’s hideout and unlock additional arcade style mini-games.
