What It Is
Florence Mills discovered a profound love of music and dancing at a very early age. And, very early on, others discovered Florence was very talented. As a black female performer, she ran into many racial obstacles. For instance, on a voyage to London to perform, white people refused to eat in the same dining room with her and threatened to boycott her show. But, once Florence started to sing, the audience was easily won over. She went on to use her fame to support her people and community of Harlem. Florence died at an early age, but in just a short time, she entertained and inspired hundreds of thousands of people to follow their dreams, no matter their race.
Why It’s Fun
February is Black History Month and a great opportunity for kids and parents to discover some of the heroic achievements of notable African-Americans. This book also provides a nice gateway for a discussion about prejudice and tolerance. This biography has a very inspiring story with vibrant illustrations that are highly engaging and capture the feeling of a little girl with big dreams.
