What It Is
At one point or another, most little girls dream of being a ballerina. Even young vampires. But, young Vampirina is having a hard time finding the perfect dance class. Because she’s a vampire, she has to find one that meets at night. Another challenge is that she can’t see herself in the mirror and her fangs frighten her classmates. But through some determination and perseverance, she overcomes the many challenges she faces and makes it through the class and onto the recital.
Why It’s Fun
During the Halloween season, this book is “wicked” cute and can be a fun way to talk with the kids about overcoming obstacles and conquering their fears. It’s a humorous story, and the illustrations and font help evoke a quasi-haunted feel.
Who It’s For
The publisher’s recommended age is 2-6 years, but I would recommend it for no younger than six. While vampires may be “in,” some parents, myself included, may not want to introduce such young kids to the idea of vampires. If I had to explain what a vampire is to my kids, they would surely have nightmares.
What To Be Aware Of
Though the illustrations are gentle, always consider a child’s fear tolerance when talking about monsters such as vampires. If you do purchase the book, the cover jacket has some sparkle that the hard cover does not, so take care not to lose it!
