What It Is
Herbert Timberteeth has written a song called “What Animals Like Most” and he’s picked a wide variety of animals, called the National Animal Choir, to perform it on-stage. But, the song is predictable and the animal performers soon tire of it. So, they change up the lyrics, much to Herbert’s chagrin. For instance, the cows claim that they like to dig instead of moo, and the kangaroos prefer playing ping pong to hopping.
Why It’s Fun
It’s fun to imagine how animals think and this book plays off that fantasy with a story set around a troupe of animal performers. Kids will love the stops and starts of the story as they see Herbert grow more frustrated. The hand-drawn illustrations are great, as are the gate-folds that open and close the “show” and story. In addition to providing a fun tale with lots of laughs, the author delivers a message about preconceived notions and stereotypes. But the message is so subtle that parents can choose to work with it or just enjoy the fun of the story.
Who It’s For
I’d recommend this book for the pre-K set, which is the likely age to most appreciate the animals’ whacky inclinations.
What To Be Aware Of
Though a humorous story, the book may have appeal for a limited amount of time making the hardcover price a bit much to digest. Parents may want to check it out at the library first.
