Double Trouble Groundhog Day
What It Is
Grampie Groundhog has the important job of popping out of the ground every February 2nd to check the weather. This year, Grampie is ready to pass the torch on to one of his quarrelsome twin grandchildren, Greta and Gregory. Of course, they fight over who will get the honors and celebrity attention. Gregory wins after drawing straws and another round of bickering ensues. On the night before the big event, Gregory has a hard time sleeping. When Greta finally awakens her brother the next morning, he has such a case of stage fright that he even needs his sister to pull him out of the ground. Members of the press were surprised to see TWO groundhogs and a new tradition was born.
Why It’s Fun
Well, it’s that time of year again, and if your household is like mine there is always some debate about what it really means when the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow. Are there six more weeks of winter, or six less? Even Gregory Groundhog gets confused. Since we have become such a “Google it” society, it’s nice to revert to a children’s picture book for the answer. This is a sweet story with colorful illustrations that warrants at least an annual read while the children are young.
Who’s Going To Love It
The light text and easy read make this book suitable for preschoolers and children on the younger end of the publisher’s recommended age range. Oh, and in case you are wondering ... if the groundhog sees his shadow, there’ll be six more weeks of winter. If he does not, spring will come early. Happy Groundhog Day!
