LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5 - 7

Let’s Go To Hogwarts, One Last Time

What It Is

We said goodbye to Harry Potter in J.K. Rowling’s books and then the Warner Bros. movies, so it looks like it’s time to say goodbye to Harry and friends in the LEGO video games. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 continues the adventure that was launched in Years 1-4. The game takes us through the final three books and last four films of the Harry Potter franchise. Once again, the world of Harry Potter has been recreated in LEGO style, and the game plays out as an adventure title with puzzle-solving elements throughout each level.

Why It’s Fun

Heading into this game, I wasn’t expecting Years 5-7 to be anything other than a fun conclusion to the previous game (Years 1-4), which technically, it is. However, the developers at TT Games must have decided to end this series on a high note because they created a great game that stands alone and has become one of my favorite games of the year.

The basic play-style of the game remains the same, and the unique LEGO video game humor, a central element of the LEGO games, is brilliantly displayed in Years 5-7. The spell casting system from Years 1-4 is back, but the way players access the spells has been improved to allow players to easily cycle through the spells as compared to the frustrating menu system from the previous game.

Years 5-7 allows players to visit many settings from the movies and books, including Hogwarts and London. In addition to familiar settings, there are also levels in the game that bring the books to life by using a side-scrolling style with enemies and obstacles that “pop up” like a pop-up book.

Who’s Going To Love It

With the exception of the pop-up levels, most of the game’s visuals are derived from the movies. However, the story elements come directly from the books. There are small details from both scattered throughout the game, which should have fans of both media and the LEGO games loving Years 5-7.

Kids as young as six should be able to play the game without help from older siblings or adults. Adults will also enjoy the game, especially when playing with the kids in their lives.

What To Be Aware Of

Like the previous LEGO Harry Potter game, Years 5-7 is a deep game filled with hidden elements that could take days for the average player to uncover. Even playing through the game as quickly as possible, without searching for hidden elements, the average gamer will probably take about 15 hours to complete this game.

Replayability

Once the game has been completed, players can return to any level and seek out those hidden objects that might have been missed the first time around.

Fun Scale

4 out of 5

It has to be fun or it wouldn’t be on Time to Play. But some games are more fun than others so here’s our scale: 1 is fun, 2 is a lot of fun, 3 is great, 4 is awesome and 5 is out-of-this-world!
