The Ecology Club Series
What It Is
Released earlier this year, the Ecology Club, is a two-book series featuring the preschool character, Caillou. In the first book, Every Drop Counts, Caillou and his preschool class learn about water conservation. Over the weekend, Caillou and his parents discover that there are many simple things they can do to reduce the amount of water that they use in the home, such as fixing leaky faucets, shutting off the tap while brushing teeth, and collecting rainwater for the plants. Caillou’s grandmother teaches him a nifty new “trick” in The Magic of Compost. She shows Caillou that certain food scraps can be put into a special bin that, over time, turns the waste into rich soil that is excellent for gardening and returning nutrients to the earth.
Why It’s Fun
Composting and water conservation are simple enough activities to continue in the home and set a good example for being environmentally mindful — something at which many of us can improve. These books are a bit more palatable to adults than the animated series, though many kids are engaged by it, and offer a nice lesson in a light-hearted manner. Of course, the books are printed on 100% recycled paper.
Who’s Going To Love It
Preschoolers tend to like Caillou more than their parents, and that is reason enough to give these two books a try. The content in the Ecology Club series is easily understood by children in the publisher’s recommended age group, and would be enjoyable, as well as informational, in the home or classroom.
