Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident

Ditch Your Book and Jump into This Engaging Mystery Game

What It Is

Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident is a first person-perspective game in which players use the Wii Remote to explore Malgrave Island and try to unlock the mysterious island’s secrets.

The game is made up of highly detailed and visually interesting areas that the player moves through by selecting from a simple menu of directions. Within each area, there are multiple scenes with objects hidden in them. The player uses the Wii Remote to find all of the objects on a list before progressing through the game. After each hidden item search, players move further into the area until they encounter a roadblock puzzle that requires them to figure out how to get around. The puzzles start off easy at the beginning of the game but get progressively more complex.

Why It’s Fun

The game’s hidden object scenes and puzzles are tied together by a mysterious and slightly creepy (in a fun way) storyline that pulls the player into the game like a good book. That story begins with an ominous delivery from Mr. Malgrave, who, along with the rest of his island’s inhabitants, has not been heard from since the island cut off ties to the rest of the world. Mr. Malgrave has reached out to the player and invited him or her to the island for help in recovering a strange pink dust that is rumored to have curative properties. The story and the game’s imagery possess an old-timey, steam-punk look and vibe that adds to the mystery and enjoyment of the game.

Who’s Going To Love It

The Malgrave Incident is going to appeal primarily to fans of casual games. Of those fans, I can see players of all ages enjoying this game. It is a great game for parents, older siblings, babysitters, aunts, uncles, etc. to play with young kids because the kids can hold the Wii remote and control the pointing while they work together with an adult to spot the hidden items.

Those young kids should be able to play on their own as long as they know how to read the lists of hidden items. Some of the words on the lists, such as “sextant”, might require an adult to explain and help find.

What To Be Aware Of

If players become stumped, they can ask for a hint which will clue them in on the specific region of the image where the missing item is located. Players will have to wait several seconds before they can use the hint feature again.

Mystery Case Files are a series of PC and Mac games, and The Malgrave Incident is the first console game version of the series. I’ve never played any of the PC or Mac games, so I can tell you without a doubt that you don’t need to be familiar with the series to enjoy Malgrave.

In addition to the single-player mode, there are a few multiplayer modes that allow up to four people to play competitive games based on the scenes and areas. These multiplayer modes add a level of replayability to the game, but chances are good that once a player has finished the single-player mode, they won’t be too interested in playing again.

Fun Scale

3 out of 5

It has to be fun or it wouldn’t be on Time to Play. But some games are more fun than others so here’s our scale: 1 is fun, 2 is a lot of fun, 3 is great, 4 is awesome and 5 is out-of-this-world!
