How to Get a Job ... By Me, the Boss

What It Is

It’s never too early to learn job-hunting skills! This new picture book, in Sally Lloyd-Jones’ “how-to” series, is a humorous guide for tot job seekers, narrated by a young female “executive” known as “The Boss.” The Boss begins with the basics of working, such as the need for money and “something to do.” From a child’s point of view, she covers the skills needed for a wide variety of “professions,” including a scuba diver, magician, teacher and police officer, among others. The Boss advises readers to chose a job based on what they are good at. For example, you shouldn’t be a chef “if you can’t even cook cereal.” She also tells us what a resume is, and what to do and not do on an interview, such as interviewees should shake hands, but not fall asleep or bring along their family. And, if you are very good at your job and stay at it for a long time, you may become The Boss!

Why It’s Fun

Kids are often intrigued by their parents’ jobs and love to role play “working.” The topics covered in this book may even give them ideas for later play scenarios. The story is very funny but a bit long. The Boss covers a lot of ground, which may be a bit much for a child to absorb at once. Repeated readings will help. However, Sue Heap’s illustrations are spectacular and will help keep your child engaged.

Who’s Going To Love It

The appeal of this book would be kids on the older end of the publisher’s recommended age range because of its length and depth. Younger kids may not grasp concepts such as a resume or interview and may lose focus. But it’s a great library find, especially for a child who’s parent is returning to work or conducting a job hunt.
