Fancy Nancy and the Fabulous Fashion Boutique

What It Is

In this addition to the popular Fancy Nancy series, Nancy eyes a fabulous lace fan at a boutique, but doesn’t have enough money to buy it. So she sets up her own boutique in her front yard and sells her “old” clothes and accessories to raise enough money. While business is great, Nancy’s little sister, JoJo, is very upset because she wants to buy her sparkly rhinestone necklace but has no money. Despite JoJo’s interest, Nancy sells the necklace to a friend. JoJo later catches Nancy wrapping a gift and is hopeful that it’s the necklace. Nancy’s conscience gets the best of her and she offers several other jewelry pieces and money to her friend to get the necklace back. Of course, JoJo is thrilled when she opens the necklace on her birthday. Nancy comes to the rescue again when rain puts a damper on JoJo’s party. She has JoJo’s friends dress-up in her fancy clothes, gives them tips on modeling and has them do a fashion show. Nancy’s parents commend her for being such a great sister and JoJo gives her a special big-sister present — the lace fan.

Why It’s Fun

Fancy Nancy books are great picture books, from the sparkly book jacket right on through to the end. The illustrations really bring alive the fantasy of being “fancy” for kids and adults. The drawings and stories also have a comedic tone which makes Nancy’s over-the-top personality funny. Plus, author Jane O’Connor cleverly gives parents a fun way to introduce “big” words and vocabulary to kids. The Fancy Nancy web site has some entertaining activities for kids, and features useful parent information such as “fancy” party planning, reading and recipes. Parents can even share photos of their kids all fancied out.

Who’s Going To Love It

I find Fancy Nancy books appeal most to kids on the younger end of the 4-to-7 age range. My girls were never huge fans, though I know plenty of girls who are and understand the franchise’s appeal. Personally, I think the character is a bit too self-absorbed, so it was nice to see her do something selfless in this book to make her younger sister happy. Nonetheless, this Fancy Nancy book is a fine addition to any collection and a great library pick too.
