Gigi in the Big City
What It Is
Young Gigi is off to spend a day in the city and invites readers to go along with her in this engaging novelty book. Kids can explore the city with Gigi through pull tabs, flaps and picture-changing wheels, as she takes mass transportation, goes shopping, visits museums and other exciting activities. Each page is themed to a different aspect or area of the city, and has fun facts that kids and parents can reveal and learn together. Young girls who live or grew up in a city are also featured to give readers a taste of what urban living is like. A trip to the city is made extra special with fancy and frivolous activities, such as a trip to the salon where kids can change Gigi’s hairstyle and learn how to give the perfect pedicure. When the day is done, Gigi summarizes her adventure in her diary and drifts off to sleep, dreaming about her big day.
Why It’s Fun
A trip to a big city can be a huge thrill for little girls and this book is a creative, fun way for young kids to explore metropolitan hustle and bustle right from their own homes. While there isn’t a plot to read per se, there is plenty to discover with hidden surprises on each page. For example, the “Parade of Shops” storefront lifts to reveal flaps that kids can mix and match to help Gigi try on the latest clothing styles. Or, kids can learn the difference between fiction, biographies and non-fiction along with other types of books by visiting the “Book Shop.” Charise Harper’s illustration are colorful and busy, as one would imagine a city to be.
Who’s Going To Love It
Young girls who love a little excitement, culture and glamour will really enjoy this book. It makes a great gift and is one that girls will like to revisit periodically. With many fun features and tidbits of information packed inside, kids will likely discover something new each time they “read” it. The publisher’s recommended age is right on, but it’s “girly girls” that the book will appeal to most as a gift or purchase.
