Ivy The Kiwi?
A Unique Action Game Starring an Unlikely Action Hero
What It Is
The creator of Sonic the Hedgehog has come up with a new and original game starring a baby bird named Ivy, on a search for her mother. The game is a series of 2D, side-view levels in which Ivy runs back and forth on her own and it is up to the player to guide her by drawing vines on the screen. The vines can be used to reverse Ivy’s direction, lift her up over obstacles or bridge a span of dangerous spikes.
Why It’s Fun
The game is cute and simple but challenging and hard to put down. There is no one correct way to place the vines that guide Ivy from start to finish, which allows players to develop their own strategies and styles of playing.
There are 100 levels that grow progressively more challenging by adding elements including a time limit, enemies and bricks that you have to propel Ivy through by pulling on a vine while she is walking across it. In addition to the obstacles, collectible feathers are scattered around each level, but they aren’t always on the quickest route to the goal. It’s up to the player to choose whether or not to risk running out of time in an attempt to find all the feathers.
Who’s Going To Love It
The game features a hand-drawn animation style that looks like something out of a children’s book and is sure to appeal to young gamers ages 5 to 10. Unexperienced gamers in this age group might find Ivy challenging at first but they will get the hang of it if they keep playing.
Parents will appreciate how quickly (a matter of minutes) each of the 100 levels can be completed, which makes this an ideal game to play with the kids when parents can’t commit a ton of time.
What To Be Aware Of
Four players can compete against each other through the local networking WiFi connection on the DS. The Wii Version features a four-player competition via a split-screen. In addition to the competitive mode, the Wii version also features a cooperative mode in which multiple players can help Ivy with their own vines.
3 out of 5
It has to be fun or it wouldn’t be on Time to Play. But some games are more fun than others so here’s our scale: 1 is fun, 2 is a lot of fun, 3 is great, 4 is awesome and 5 is out-of-this-world!
