100 Classic Books

Why Settle For One Book on the Beach When You Can Take 100

What It Is

While Apple, Barnes & Noble, Sony and Amazon battle each other for domination of the e-reader market with their iPad, Kindle and other devices, Nintendo quietly released a new software cartridge that turns the DS into an e-reader. 100 Classic Books, is a collection of 100 full-length books from authors such as Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Jules Verne, Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen and more.

With the cartridge inserted, flipping the Nintendo DS on its side turns the two screens into two pages, which you turn by swiping the touchscreen or using the control pad. The DS’ screens allow for crisp, bright pages that are easy to read.

Why It’s Fun

Aside from the enjoyment of reading a good book, 100 Classic Books features several digital innovations that make reading these books fun. My favorite is the available background music options. You can select musical styles such as Classic and Easy Listening or sound effects including ocean waves, an open fire or the hypnotic noise of a moving train. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the sounds of a hot Summer Day (crickets and frogs) while reading Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Of course, you can always go old school and turn off the background music entirely.

Another feature that makes this so pleasurable is the multitude of search options. If you know what you want to read, you can search for it by title and author, however, if you are having a difficult time selecting just one of these amazing titles then you can try one of the more advanced options such as searching by Book Length (short, medium, long, very long), Genre, Type (novel, play, essay, short stories, poetry, nonfiction), Reading Difficulty (easy, moderate, difficult) and when it was written (1900 - present, 1850 - 1899, 1800 - 1849, before 1800). You can also display all the book binders as if they were on a shelf and use the touchscreen to scroll through them all until you find the one you want to read. It’s like having a library in your pocket.

Who’s Going To Love It

Anyone who can, and enjoys, reading is going to love 100 Classic Books.

These are unedited, unabridged books so adults will enjoy them and kids with assigned book-reading lists from school can also be assured that they are reading the same book as everyone with old fashioned paperback editions.

Some of the old-English literature might at first be foreign to or even difficult for younger kids, but the benefits of being able to read and comprehend sophisticated writing is a huge advantage in learning — and these are some of the best-loved and classic tales of all time.

What To Be Aware Of

100 Classic Books is compatible with Nintendo DS, DS Lite and DSi models.

The digital bookmark feature allows you to save your place in a book.

Additional books can be download via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service.

Fun Scale

4 out of 5

It has to be fun or it wouldn’t be on Time to Play. But some games are more fun than others so here’s our scale: 1 is fun, 2 is a lot of fun, 3 is great, 4 is awesome and 5 is out-of-this-world!
