F is for Flag

What It Is

Our flag is the United States’ most important symbol of freedom and unity, and this book provides a simple introduction to it for kids. Basic language and concepts make a nice story out of the meaning of our flag, which author Wendy Cheyette Lewison poetically describes is “just like a hand waving hello.” Kids will learn some places where our flag is waved, such as in school and other public venues, as well as some of its early history. Ms. Lewison also introduces ways we pay our respect to the flag by mentioning the Pledge of Allegiance, “The Star-Spangled Banner” and of course, Flag Day, the flag’s “birthday.”

Why It’s Fun

A great way to celebrate Flag Day with the kids is by reading a story about Old Glory. Young kids will enjoy learning fun facts about the flag such as its many nicknames (e.g., “Stars and Stripes,” “Red, White and Blue,” “Star Spangled Banner,” etc.), the meaning behind the stars and stripes, and some of the many places where we see the flag and why. Ms. Lewison gives us a bit of the flag’s history by telling Betsy Ross’ story as a possibility. Oddly, she explains that there are several stories as to how the flag was created, however does not give us any other theories. The illustrations are sweet and colorful, putting the flag in common scenes of everyday American life. The Statue of Liberty even makes an appearance on the last page and is seen “watching” ships in the Hudson River waving the “Red, White and Blue.”

Who’s Going To Love It

The publisher’s recommended age is 3-8, but this book really geared to the 3-5 range. Older kids will have already learned more about the flag in school so it’s most appropriate for preschoolers. At a value price, it’s a good pick for an occasional read with the young ones on key U.S. holidays such as Flag Day and the Fourth of July.
