What It Is
Sonny With A Chance is the latest Disney Channel hit show and stars Demi Lovato in the role of Allison “Sonny” Munroe, a teen who lands a role on her favorite TV show, “So Random”! The video game, of the same name, allows fans of the show to play as their favorite character in a collection of mini-games with a board game theme.
Why It’s Fun
There are more than 40 mini-games inspired by episodes and funny events from the TV show that its fans are going to love. The game features familiar locations from the show (Don’t worry, those locations are in the game also.), and even the power-ups are comical inside jokes such as whip cream pies and banana peels. I’m guessing this would make a lot more sense to me if I had ever seen an episode. But then, try as I might to stay on top of these things I’m really not the target audience.
Another element that fans think is a blast is the ability to customize the playable characters—Sonny, Tawni, Nico, Grady and Zora—with costumes inspired by the “So Random” sketches.
Who’s Going To Love It
Fans of the TV show, between the ages of 5 and 8 are likely to love this game. If they like the situations, bits and characters, interacting with them in this medium will be a logical and entertaining experience. Kids ages 8 through 12 will enjoy the game but will probably play through it quickly with ease. Most of the fans of those shows are girls, so the same will likely apply to the game.
What To Be Aware Of
Sonny With A Chance includes two DSi-exclusive games that rely on the DSi’s camera. Those games will not be playable on the older DS system because it lacks the camera. The good thing about mini-games is that they can be played over and over, which increases any game’s replay value.
2 out of 5
It has to be fun or it wouldn’t be on Time to Play. But some games are more fun than others so here’s our scale: 1 is fun, 2 is a lot of fun, 3 is great, 4 is awesome and 5 is out-of-this-world!
