Deca Sports DS
Fit The Wild World of Sports in The Palm of Your hand
What It Is
Following the success of the Deca Sports series on the Wii, Deca Sports DS is a diverse collection of ten sports games that range from standards like golf and Ping Pong to the more off-beat such as Arm Wrestling, Clay Shooting and Sepak Takraw (that’s a new one to me).
Why It’s Fun
Deca Sports DS meets one of my favorite criteria for fun games—you can pick it up and start playing immediately regardless of your skill level. The game features highly intuitive controls using either the DS’ buttons or touch screen.
The variety of sports makes this a fun and unique game that can also teach players about a sport they have never heard of. For example, back to the sport of Sepak Takraw. Before playing Deka Sports, I had no idea that this traditional Southeast Asian sport combining elements from soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, and martial arts even existed.
Gamers will also be able to design their own teams by customizing uniforms, changing athlete abilities and even altering the physical characteristics of the athletes themselves.
Who’s Going To Love It
This game is going to appeal mostly to the youngest gamers, roughly ages 5 through 10. At that age, you will probably find that boys are more into it than girls, but that doesn’t mean that girls won’t also love this game. A good rule of thumb for whether or not the kids in your life are old enough for this game is do they know how to use the DS in general. If they still need an adults help with the DS than they are too young. If the little gamer is already showing you how to use the DS than they are ready for Deca Sports regardless of their age.
What To Be Aware Of
The ten sports included in this game are Arm Wrestling, Bobsled, Cheerleading, Clay Shooting, Golf, Ping Pong, Rugby, Sepak Takraw, Sky Diving and Wall Climbing.
The game allows kids to battle up to six friends on individual DS units with just one game cartridge in a multi-sports competition. Each DS will need to have WiFi in order to join in.
3 out of 5
It has to be fun or it wouldn’t be on Time to Play. But some games are more fun than others so here’s our scale: 1 is fun, 2 is a lot of fun, 3 is great, 4 is awesome and 5 is out-of-this-world!
