The Valentine Bears

What It Is

A heartwarming, classic story of Mrs. Bear’s mission to celebrate Valentine’s Day with her dear Mr. Bear, which they always miss because of their hibernation. Mrs. Bear sets her alarm for early on February 14th and prepares her surprises. But, she has a hard time waking up Mr. Bear, only to find that he’s got some of his own surprises for her!

Why It’s Fun

Mrs. Bear’s planning and determination to create a romantic Valentine’s Day is both sweet and humorous. There’s a couple of great opportunities to make a good snoring sound. But, the most fun is the book’s "punch line." Mrs. Bear has a hard time waking Mr. Bear and is about to dump ice cold water on him when he pops out of bed. Startled, she dumps the water on herself! Apparently, he’s known what she’s been up to all along and has presents of his own for her.

Who’s Going To Love It

Who’s not? Snoring bears, chocolate-covered insects, fun surprises… all elements of a great story! On the educational side, the topic of hibernation is always intriguing for kids, as is the bears’ diet… critters and ants. The illustrations are unmistakenly Jan Brett. Not her best in my opinion, but they do bring the story to life.

The publisher’s web site has a recommended age of birth to 3, but the story and humor seems geared to older toddlers and beyond. Kids in the early elementary years will love the story too, especially if it’s an annual read. A definite "buy" versus "borrow it from the library." You may find yourself reading it year-round!
